How to care for luxury swimwear so it lasts

The habits that extend the life of a well-made piece by years

A well-made swimwear piece can last several seasons if it is cared for correctly. Most swimwear deteriorates not from wear but from the combination of chlorine, sunscreen residue, and heat, all of which can be managed with a few consistent habits. The care instructions that come with most swimwear are accurate but brief. This is a more detailed version.

Rinsing after every use

Rinsing in cold fresh water immediately after swimming is the single most effective thing you can do to extend the life of swimwear. Chlorine, salt, and sunscreen all continue to work on the fabric after you leave the water. Cold water removes the majority of these before they have time to degrade the elastane fibres.

Hot water should be avoided. Heat relaxes the elastane and accelerates the degradation process. A cold rinse takes thirty seconds and makes a measurable difference to how long the fabric holds its shape.

Washing and drying

Hand washing in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent is preferable to machine washing. If you use a machine, a delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag at 30 degrees is acceptable. Never use a tumble dryer. The heat damages the elastane and can distort the boning channels in structured pieces.

Dry flat in the shade. Hanging a wet swimsuit by the straps stretches them under the weight of the wet fabric. Drying in direct sunlight bleaches the colour over time, even in UV-resistant fabrics.

Storage between seasons

Store swimwear flat or loosely rolled, not folded sharply. A sharp fold held for months creates a crease in the fabric that can become permanent, particularly in double-knit constructions. Keep pieces away from direct light and heat.

Boned pieces should be stored with the boning channel supported, not compressed. A small roll of tissue paper inside the boning channel prevents it from being crushed during storage.

None of this is complicated. The habits that protect a luxury swimwear piece are the same ones that protect any well-made garment: cold water, no heat, flat drying, careful storage.
