How luxury swimwear became a design category of its own

Swimwear was functional clothing for most of its history. The shift toward swimwear as a luxury design category happened gradually through the second half of the twentieth century, driven by changes in fabric technology and by the growing cultural significance of beach holidays as a form of leisure. The category that exists today, with its Italian mills and structured construction, is a relatively recent development.

The fabric revolution of the 1970s and 1980s

The development of Lycra-based swimwear fabrics in the 1970s changed what was possible in swimwear construction. Before synthetic elastane, swimwear was made from wool, cotton, or early synthetic fibres that absorbed water, became heavy when wet, and lost their shape quickly. Lycra allowed swimwear to be lightweight, fast-drying, and form-fitting in a way that earlier fabrics could not achieve.

The 1980s saw the first luxury swimwear brands emerge as distinct entities rather than as extensions of sportswear or lingerie companies. The construction techniques borrowed from lingerie, particularly underwire boning and structured cups, began to appear in swimwear during this period.

Italian mills and the development of performance Lycra

The Italian textile industry, particularly in the Bergamo and Como regions, developed performance Lycra variants through the 1990s and 2000s that combined the stretch properties of standard elastane with improved resistance to chlorine, UV, and heat. These fabrics made it possible to produce swimwear that held its colour and shape across multiple seasons rather than degrading after one.

The mills that produce these fabrics work primarily with luxury and performance swimwear brands. The fabric is more expensive than standard swimwear Lycra and is produced in smaller quantities, which is one reason it appears in higher-priced swimwear rather than mass-market pieces.

Where the category is now

Luxury swimwear today is a distinct design category with its own fabric suppliers, construction specialists, and retail channels. The pieces that define the category share certain characteristics: limited production runs, fabrics sourced from specialist mills, construction techniques borrowed from structured garment-making, and a price point that reflects the cost of those inputs.

The category is also increasingly direct-to-consumer. The department store model that dominated luxury retail for decades has given way to smaller brands selling directly, which allows tighter control over production quality and fabric sourcing.

The history of luxury swimwear is largely a history of fabric technology. The construction followed once the materials made it possible.
